Sole Sister Review

The second book in The Boots My Mother Gave Me series, Sole Sister picks up several years later, continuing the story of Harley LeBeau and her rebellious sister Katrina ‘Kat’ LeBeau.

Relocating to Nashville to be closer to Harley and Miah, Kat aspires to launch her Sole Sister fashion line. A gutsy and impromptu plan suddenly lands her on the cover of The Ville Spill—the local celebrity gossip rag—alongside country music’s latest heartthrob, giving Sole Sister the push it needs. But Kat quickly learns that not all press is good press.

Years removed from an abusive childhood and teenage pregnancy, the past that Kat never talks about continues to seep into her life and relationships. Still struggling with the images of finding her father after his suicide, Kat forges ahead, vowing to avoid past mistakes. To focus on her career and responsibilities as a single mother, she swears off the disappointments of love. The first man she ever loved, her father, broke her heart. The first boy she ever fell in love with, her daughter’s father, broke her heart.

What Kat didn’t plan on was Nashville SWAT Officer Connor Reese. She and Connor have more pulling them together than keeping them apart. Kat finds herself in familiar territory when her plan to steer clear of heartache is derailed after spending a night in his arms. Will facing her past help to secure her future? Will Connor offer her a second chance at life and love? Or will her heart break yet again?

Staying true to its predecessor, Sole Sister explores the dynamics of strength in sisterhood, the ongoing conflict and unconditional love between mother and daughter, and the courage to become more than one’s past.

Sole Sister (2015), the second installment to The Boots My Mother Gave Me, is about finding forgiveness after two sisters endure the loss of their father to suicide. In The Boots My Mother Gave Me (2010)  Harley LeBeau leaves Georgia, Pennsylvania in search of herself. In the midst of chasing after her dream of becoming a singer she falls in love with, neighbor boy, Jeremiah 'Miah' Johnson, elopes to Hawaii, and gives birth to twins, Gia and Jackson, all with her almond intact and with Charlene the Chevelle barreling through on auto pilot.

Sole Sister is the continuation of Harley's life as a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, wife, and singer/songwriter told from Kat's, point of view. Kat learns to do life with a teenage daughter while giving entrepreneurship the good ol' college try in lifting her business off the ground. Of course, Sole Sister wouldn't be a Brooklyn James kind of read without a love story and with some hot and steamy romance.

James takes her readers to that place of vulnerability that gives the quintessential meaning to family, career, and love while finding the balance to make each work independently and simultaneously.

If you're a single woman in search of her soulmate, you need to read this book. If you're a childless woman wanting/needing children, you need to read this book. If you're a teenage girl, you need to read this book. And if you're a Grammy, you need to read this book. Brooklyn James does a terrific job of bridging the gap of three generations of sisterhood.

I found myself angry, frustrated, happy, sad, and irritated. I also found myself laughing out loud with purpose. I was excited for new found opportunity, yet angry at haters hating on success. I was giddy with Harley's and Kat's sisterly love and playfulness. No one can quite tell Harley to shut her candy hole quite like Kat. I was also sad to experience the roaring anger of oppressing the feelings of their father's suicide, but relieved when forging forgiveness.
James has the uncanny ability to pull her readers through a compelling story while capturing intense visualizations with intention. She keeps it genuine and real. It's a page-turner to boot.

Sole Sister is the heart and sole of The Boots My Mother Gave Me.
